Cognition and knowledge of health education specialists in the dental profession

Abstract
Objective: This study is to survey the cognition and knowledge of the health education specialist in the dental proffession, as well as to train the health education specialist and build a basic education system that can facilitate that.

Methods: The questionnaire survey was carried out by targeting 203 dental professionala engaged in dental hospitals and clinics which are located in Daejeon city and Chungnam province from July 1 2010 to July 30 2010.

Results: Cognition of the health education specialist was higher in the dental hygienists (53.7%) compared to the nurse assistants (27.8%), and was higher in the dental clinic (50.4%) compared to the dental hospital (47.8%). As an experience of the exam for the health education specialist, the group without experience of taking the exam accounted for the majority in the rate of 97.0%. Cognition of the health education specialist was indicated to be 37.4% for the questions ¡¯have no information about it and have never heard about it,¡¯ and 32.0% for ¡¯a little information.¡¯ The route of cognition on the health education specialist was indicated to be the highest in ¡¯heard from other people¡¯ with 48.2%. As a result of knowledge of the exam system for the health education specialist, it was shown that a low level for knowledge was indicated by a score of 1.92. Knowledge by each item was the highest in the part (2.10) on the role of the health education specialist given by the oral education and was the lowest grade of the dental education specialist based on the qualification standard (1.79). As a result, it was higher for the dental hygie ist (2.98¡¾0.46) than for the nurse assistant (1.41¡¾0.65). Depending on workplace, it was higher for the dental hospital (2.06¡¾0.97) than for the dental clinic (0.77¡¾0.06). It was the highest in the office work and other (2.34¡¾0.89).

Conclusions: Although the interest and necessity of good dental practice for the health educators is increasing there is a lack of sufficient knowledge on the exam system for health educators, as well as for the role of the health educators. It is important that the system be developed for the health educators to create a curriculum or an educational program for the workplaces of the dental professionals.
